Chiefs place CB L’Jarius Sneed on injured reserve, rule out rookie Mansoor Delane vs. Broncos

The Kansas City Chiefs placed cornerback L’Jarius Sneed on injured reserve Saturday, Oct. 31, and downgraded rookie corner Mansoor Delane to out for Sunday’s game at Denver with a shoulder injury. That’s two of their top cover men gone for a division road trip, announced on the same afternoon.

The Sneed move came as part of a three-transaction package. Cornerback Melvin Smith was signed from the practice squad to take his roster spot, and defensive end Tyreke Smith was elevated for the game, according to Sports Illustrated’s Arrowhead Report. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also reported both the Sneed and Delane news.

A trip to IR means Sneed sits at least four games: Denver, then the Jets, Falcons and Cardinals. The reports on Saturday’s move didn’t spell out the injury. Chiefs Wire noted that Sneed sat out Wednesday’s practice for a reason listed as not injury-related, then was limited Thursday and Friday before Saturday’s move.

Sneed re-signed with Kansas City this year after his stint in Tennessee. It hasn’t been his smoothest season in coverage: per NFL Pro data cited by Arrowhead Report, he’d been targeted on 29.2% of his coverage snaps, the highest rate for any player with 100-plus reps since at least 2018. He was still a regular in the secondary, and his spot now goes to younger, less experienced players.

So, what about Delane?

Delane, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 draft, picked off a pass on the first drive of his NFL career back in Week 1 against these same Broncos. The shoulder has been an on-and-off problem for months, per Arrowhead Report, and Andy Reid said Friday the team would “see how he does” before deciding. Saturday’s downgrade answered that for this week. His status for the Week 9 game against the Jets is still unclear.

With both out, Heavy projects Jadon Canady as the primary nickelback, with Nohl Williams taking on a bigger role and Kristian Fulton and Chris Roland-Wallace likely lining up across from him.

Why it matters

McGraw Media’s read: this is a depth test, not a disaster, but the timing stings. Kansas City lost Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson to the Rams in the offseason, so the margin at corner was thin before Saturday. Now the Chiefs head into a division game in Denver without Sneed or their first-round rookie, leaning on a practice-squad signing and a group with far less experience. If Delane’s shoulder calms down by the Jets game, Kansas City can ride this out. If it doesn’t, the four-game IR stretch for Sneed starts to feel a lot longer.
