Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell will spend Sunday night in a local hospital for “continued evaluation and monitoring,” the Lions said in a statement hours after he was carted off with a neck injury in Detroit’s 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Nov. 1.
The team described Campbell as resting and said it will share more when it has it. That’s the full extent of what’s official right now. The Lions haven’t disclosed a diagnosis, the results of his evaluation or any timetable, according to Detroit Sports Nation. The statement came about three hours after the game ended, Pro Football Talk noted.
In case you missed what happened
Campbell was hurt on the first play of the fourth quarter while tackling Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson, a former Lion. He stayed on the turf for several minutes while medical staff worked on him, then was placed on a backboard and carted off the field. Detroit held on and handed Minnesota its first loss of the season.
Head coach Dan Campbell spoke right after the game, before the team’s update. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family,” he said, per AFP, adding that the team had no new information at that point and would keep fans posted.
Why it matters
McGraw Media’s read: an overnight stay for monitoring isn’t a diagnosis, good or bad, and nobody should treat it like one. What it does show is a team being careful with one of its most important players and keeping its public message to exactly what it knows. That’s the right way to handle it. The depth chart can wait until next week. There’s no sense in guessing tonight, and the next update that matters will come from the Lions.
