Lions LB Jack Campbell taken to hospital for neck evaluation after being carted off vs. Vikings

Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for a neck injury Sunday, Nov. 1, after he was strapped to a backboard and carted off the field early in the fourth quarter against the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field, the Lions announced.

Campbell went down after tackling Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson over the middle. He stayed face down and didn’t move while medical staff worked on him, and he was lifted onto a cart and taken off for further evaluation, according to the Associated Press. Teammates and most of Detroit’s coaching staff surrounded the cart. Players from both teams took a knee. Detroit led 12-7 at the time, per Pro Football Talk.

It was a hard scene to watch. Aidan Hutchinson was in tears on the field, then pulled the defense together in a huddle before play resumed, 97.1 The Ticket reported.

The team hasn’t shared anything beyond the hospital evaluation, and there’s no diagnosis yet. We’ll update this story when the Lions do.

Who Campbell is to this defense

Campbell, a first-round pick out of Iowa in 2023, was a first-team All-Pro last season after piling up 176 tackles, second-most in the NFL. The AP noted he became the first player in seven years to post 150-plus tackles, at least five sacks and three forced fumbles in the same season. Detroit rewarded him in May with a four-year extension that runs through 2030.

He’s also been about as reliable as it gets. Campbell hadn’t missed a game in his first three seasons, and he had 54 tackles through six games this year, 13 more than anyone else on the roster, according to The Big Lead.

Why it matters

McGraw Media’s read: the football questions can wait. Yes, being without your leading tackler and reigning All-Pro would reshape any defense. But the only update that matters tonight is the next one from the team about Campbell’s health. The Lions have kept their message short and factual so far, which is the right call, and nobody watching from home should be filling in the blanks for them. There’s no sense guessing. Wait for the doctors.
