The Ravens’ quarterback room just got thinner. Tyler Huntley, who replaced the injured Lamar Jackson on Sunday in Buffalo, is expected to miss the rest of the 2026 season with a turf toe injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who first reported the news Wednesday morning, Nov. 4.
Tests revealed the extent of the damage, per ESPN. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the injury will require surgery, as Bleacher Report noted.
In case you missed Sunday
Jackson hurt his right thumb on Baltimore’s first offensive snap of the 36-10 loss to the Bills. Huntley came on in relief and threw just four passes before he went down in the second quarter, Yahoo Sports reported. Jackson needs thumb surgery and is headed to injured reserve, and ESPN reports he could miss the rest of the season too.
That left the game to Joe Fagnano, an undrafted rookie out of UConn. He finished 10-of-21 for 91 yards with an interception in his NFL debut.
So, who’s playing quarterback Thursday?
Fagnano. Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed Tuesday that the rookie will start Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars at M&T Bank Stadium. He’ll be only the second undrafted rookie quarterback to start a game for the Ravens, per ESPN.
He isn’t fully healthy, either. Fagnano got banged up Sunday and wore a brace over his right ankle at Tuesday’s practice. “It’s just football, a physical game we play,” he said, per ESPN.
Behind him are two quarterbacks who joined the team this week: Kedon Slovis, signed off the Packers’ practice squad, and Austin Reed, who was added to the practice squad, according to Ravens Wire. Baltimore is 4-4 and has lost three straight.
Why it matters
Here’s McGraw Media’s read: the Ravens went from Lamar Jackson to their third quarterback in one afternoon, and now that third option is starting on a short week with a brace on his ankle. Mind you, a .500 record in November isn’t a death sentence, and Fagnano deserves a fair shot to grow into this. At the same time, a team with playoff hopes can’t count on a rookie and two guys who just learned the playbook. The trade deadline is Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET, and if I’m Baltimore’s front office, finding a steady veteran for that room is the first call I’m making. For Huntley, the hope is simple: a clean surgery and a healthy return.
