The Detroit Lions said Monday, Nov. 2, that linebacker Jack Campbell is still resting and recovering at a local hospital, and that “preliminary indications are positive.” The team added that it won’t share anything more for now out of respect for Campbell and his family, according to the Associated Press via ESPN.
Head coach Dan Campbell sounded relieved at his Monday press conference. He pointed reporters to the team’s release and called it positive news on Jack. “So your prayers are working. Please continue to do that,” he said, WDIV ClickOnDetroit reported.
In case you missed what happened Sunday
Campbell went down early in the fourth quarter of Detroit’s 19-15 win over Minnesota at Ford Field, the game that handed the Vikings their first loss of the season. He’d just tackled tight end T.J. Hockenson and stayed face down on the turf. Players from both teams knelt while medical staff strapped him to a backboard and carted him off. He was alert and breathing when he was taken to the hospital, the AP reported.
The Lions have described it only as a neck injury. They haven’t released a diagnosis, and there’s no word yet on when he’ll leave the hospital.
Where it leaves Detroit’s defense
Campbell is the engine of that unit. He leads the Lions with 57 tackles this season, per Yahoo Sports. Last year he became the first NFL player in seven years to post 150-plus tackles, at least five sacks and three forced fumbles, and he was named All-Pro. Detroit drafted him 18th overall in 2023 out of Iowa and signed him in May to an extension that runs through the 2030 season.
The Lions are 5-2, second in the NFC North and riding a three-game win streak. They visit the Dolphins in Week 9, then face the Patriots in Munich in Week 10.
Why it matters
Football comes second here, and the Lions are handling the messaging the right way: a short statement that offers real hope without overpromising, with the rest left private for Campbell and his family to share when they’re ready. McGraw Media’s read is simple. Yes, a 5-2 team without its leading tackler faces real roster questions. But nobody should be guessing at timelines for a neck injury, and the key word in Monday’s statement is preliminary. After the scene at Ford Field on Sunday, positive is the best word the Lions could have used. For now, that’s enough.
