The New York Giants are keeping Greg Newsome II around well past this season. The cornerback and the team agreed Tuesday, Nov. 3, to a three-year, $46 million contract extension that includes $32 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported the same terms, and ClutchPoints noted the deal was negotiated by Erik Burkhardt of Roc Nation Sports.

This one started as a bet on himself. Newsome came to New York on a one-year deal in free agency this offseason, a prove-it contract for a former first-round pick looking for a fresh start. He’s turned it into a multiyear deal before the season is half over.

How he got here

Cleveland drafted Newsome in the first round in 2021 out of Northwestern, and he spent most of four-plus seasons with the Browns before a 2025 trade sent him to Jacksonville. He played in the postseason with both clubs. Over 77 regular-season games, he has 232 tackles, five interceptions and a sack, per Pro Football Talk.

In New York, he’s settled in as a starting outside corner under first-year head coach John Harbaugh. Pro Football Talk credits him with 25 tackles, an interception and six passes defensed this season.

The timing matters, too. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. ET, and locking Newsome up now takes one contract question off the Giants’ plate a week before buyers and sellers have to make their moves.

Why it matters

McGraw Media’s read: $32 million guaranteed on a $46 million deal is a real commitment, not a hedge. The Giants could have let Newsome play out the year and dealt with him in March, when the market would have set his price. Instead, they paid now to keep a starter they trust in the secondary and avoid a bidding war. For a player who signed a one-year deal this offseason, that’s about as clean a win as prove-it contracts get. For the Giants, it’s a signal that they see this cornerback room as something to build on, not patch every spring.
